After more than 10 years at the helm of Poole Dick, Steve Connolly has decided to step down as Managing Director and hand over the reins to Martin Brownsill.
Martin joined Poole Dick in the same month a certain Gary Lineker became the most expensive British footballer ever in a £2.75 million move to Everton from FC Barcelona – July 1986. We did manage to get Martin on better terms than that, and he’s certainly given value for money for the last three decades!
Steve will remain as a full board member with the title of Chairman, but it’s Martin who will be driving Poole Dick towards its strategic goals.
For the last 20 years Martin has been responsible for the growth of our Stoke office and his new role will certainly involve more time in Manchester with fellow director Andy Bayley. Under Martin’s leadership, Poole Dick will continue progressing towards its 2020 Vision and the establishment of the Poole Dick Way as a benchmark for the management of building projects.
“This is part of a long-term succession plan for our company,” explains Martin, “and follows on from the appointment of Andy Bayley to the Board last year. Steve Connolly has left a powerful imprint on this business and played a huge part in establishing our reputation in the industry. I’m so pleased he’s continuing as Chairman – we’d miss ribbing each other!”
One of Martin’s goals is to continue to expand the number of sectors and geographical areas in which Poole Dick operates (he recently returned from assignments in Asia and Africa). These are the strategic issues which concern an MD, but it’s the small stories and company culture that gives Martin the greatest satisfaction.
“Structures don’t build themselves,” he explains. “It’s people who build things and it’s the relationships you develop within the company and outside that makes this job so varied and rewarding. I love seeing our employees grow, whether that’s passing exams and joining the ranks of the RICS or promoting our profession to youngsters and winning industry awards.”
Working on numerous projects for Lidl has encouraged more collaboration between offices, and fellow directors Steve Lowndes and Andy Bayley will continue to run (respectively) the daily operation of the Stoke and Manchester centres.
Speaking of Martin’s appointment, Steve Connolly says, “This is the right time to be handing over the role of MD. Martin is the ideal person to take Poole Dick forwards and I’m delighted he has taken on the challenge at such an exciting time in our journey.”
One of Martin’s first jobs will be to represent the company at MIPIM 2018, alongside Andy Bayley.
