(Post by Poole Dick MD Steve Connolly – Manchester team above, Stoke team in body of article)
To quote a well-known song, it’s been a “long and winding road” since we embarked on a journey three-and-a-half years ago to make Poole Dick the best QS firm in the country to work with, and to work for. Winning the People Development category at last week’s Constructing Excellence National Awards showed just how far we’ve come during that time.
Our Inside-Out approach (great on the inside = quality service on the outside) has meant a strong focus on soft skills development, company culture and a transformed working environment. It’s paid off in many ways, helping us stand out in the market and gain confidence in our brand.
Friends and colleagues are familiar with my competitive nature. I like winning and was euphoric when our name was called out during the ceremony last Friday at the London Marriott, Grosvenor Square.
I’d travelled down there with my fellow director, but as Martin Brownsill and I walked up to the stage to collect the award I suddenly felt regret that the people who’d made this achievement possible – our colleagues – weren’t there to share the moment.
I found myself wishing we’d decided to sod the cost and hire a coach for the whole workforce to don their glad rags and join the party! Perhaps it would have been tempting fate but I’ve always had this feeling that achievement should be more about the team than the individual. I’m not much of a golfer but give me the Ryder Cup anytime!
After the ceremony the judges told us that our story stood out amongst some big-hitting companies and that it was refreshing to see a modest-sized firm such as ours showing the multi-nationals how to treat people.
If you’d like to know more about the path we’ve been on, keep an eye out for our soon-to-be-released publication Discovering the Poole Dick Way, a kind of ‘manifesto’ for success.
My thanks go to everyone at Poole Dick who have shared this journey with me – this is your award, you are all winners…now let’s get this party started!
